Has Twitter caught up with Facebook in awareness?

A recent report on Twitter usage in the U.S. by Edison Research concludes that 87% of all Americans are now aware of Twitter — up from 5% in 2008 — but only 7% of the population actually use it!

Edison’s data was collected in February from 1,753 Americans ages 12 and up. The report also includes the company’s findings on Twitter usage over the last three years.

What’s is interesting is that the percentage of Americans who are aware of Twitter actually supersedes the percentage of those who have Internet access (85%). Twitter is now equally as well known as Facebook, albeit used far less.

Edison also finds that mobile usage is a key component of Twitter’s value proposition and that users are more likely to update and access Twitter via mobile devices than other social networking sites. One in five Twitter users update Twitter via their mobile devices several times per day; one in three do so at least once daily.

Some other interesting findings from the “Twitter Usage in America” report:

As a whole, the report supports previous findings on the state of Twitter and emphasizes that it is more important for Twitter to define its purpose than build awareness. Additional findings and charts are included in the full report, which is available here:

Nokia N8: The best Nokia yet?

Amidst all the news about the iPhone and Android phones, people seem to have forgotten about Nokia, the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones, as far as sales are concerned. But there is a reason for that. While all the other manufacturers were bringing innovative new products to the market; with great design, user friendly interface and rich features and functionality, Nokia didn't do that!

None of their recent phone launches made people sit up and take notice. However, their recent announcement of the Nokia N8 seems to be just doing that.

Armed with a bevy of features, the new Nokia N8 comes with an enviable specifications list. But its not just the specifications that make the N8 an important product. The phone also brings several new never seen before features for a Nokia phone, such as a 12 megapixel camera with xenon flash, 720p/25fps video recording, multi-touch capacitive OLED touchscreen, HDMI-out, anodized aluminum body, Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth v3.0, among others. But perhaps one of the most important features is the operating system - Symbian^3 - which makes the Nokia N8 the first device to flaunt this OS.

Social networking is now an integral part of life, which is why the Nokia N8 comes with support for drawing live updates from Twitter and Facebook right on to the homescreen using the respective integrated apps. And that’s just at the cost a simple tap on the screen!

Just like most of the next generation Nokia phones these days , the Nokia N8 comes with Nokia Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation with support in more than 70 countries globally. Besides this, the Nokia N8 offers customizable homescreens, homescreen widgets, improved 2D and 3D graphics for more intuitive UI, better memory management and a visual task manager.

Interestingly, the Nokia 12MP camera phone is also the first Nokia phone to come integrated with Qt. Got an idea for an app which lets other Symbian users develop and share Symbian apps across native and other such platforms.

If you are wishing to embrace this urbane-looking Nokia beauty, you’ll be glad to know that it looks equally stunning in all the five glamorous colors available for its make.

How to find who Retweeted your tweets & the Retweets made by you...

Retweet is a recently introduced  feature introduced by twitter. The Retweet feature helps user to quickly share information which they find interesting, over to their followers in one click.

Surprisingly, even now a significant number of Twitter users are unaware of how to check who retweeted them and whom did they retweet in the recent past!

This article aims to clear away the unawareness/confusion (if any) that you may have.

Follow the steps below:

1. Login to Twitter and open twitter homepage.

2. Click the Retweets option in right sidebar.

3. You’ll now see 3 columns – what’s been retweeted by people you follow, what you’ve retweeted, and who retweeted your tweets!

Farmville soon to be available on iPhone, iPad and Android Devices?

Not only is Farmville is one of the world’s current favorite online game, it has immensely increased Facebook's popularity among the masses. Now Farmville is reported to be expanding itself from your desktop web browsers to other mobile platforms including Google Android and iPhone OS.

If reports uncovered by Superannuation are to be believed, Zynga – the company that holds the official Farmville domain for facebook has also purchased domains for these mobile platforms which include farmvilleipad.com, farmvilleiphone.com and farmvillesms.com.

Apparently, this suggests that three new versions of the game, Farmville for iPad, Farmville for iPhone / iPod Touch and Farmville For Android are being developed by Zynga and should be hitting the stores sometime in the near future!

Ever since its launch on Facebook, Farmville – a virtual farmyard where users develop and maintain farms, harness crops, exchange virtual gifts with their facebook Farmville buddies, has seen enormous and instant popularity and has been widely acclaimed, embraced (and criticized) across various parts of the globe.

The original Facebook Farmville game is based on Flash but since Apple does not entertain Flash for the reasons of ‘cross compilation’ and other such issues, what remains to be seen is whether the upcoming iPad Farmville Game/iPhone Farmville Game will continue to keep Farmville users interested or not.

I’ve seen some of my friends take Facebook Farmville so seriously that they often skip exercise, bunk classes, get inevitably angry or claim to be ‘irritated’ when asked to pause/ take a break   from Farmville.

Perhaps, this extreme interest and loyalty among 'Farmville farmers' explains the reason why Zynga is expanding Farmville to platforms like the iPhone OS and Google Android.

For now this is just a rumor but it sure has stirred up a Hornet's nest!

Martin Cooper - The inventor of CellPhones

Martin Cooper may not be a household name, but his invention is familiar to more than half the planet's population who now own atleast one mobile phone.

The concept of a handheld phone was his brainchild, and with the help of his Motorola team, the first handset was born in 1973 weighing in at two kilos.

When he stood on a New York street and made the first phone call from a prototype cellular phone, he could not have conceived how successful it would become.

Now a worldwide telecoms industry has sprung up along with a vast array of technologies developed for mobile phones. Cooper told reporters that producing the first phone cost Motorola the equivalent of $1m (£650,000) in today's money.

"We had to virtually shut down all engineering at our company and have everybody working on the phone and the infrastructure to make the thing work," he said.

"Even by 1983, a portable handheld cellular telephone cost $4,000 (£2,600), which would be the equivalent of more than $10,000 (£6,500) today." Mr Cooper said his team faced the challenge of squeezing thousands of parts into a phone for the first time.

"The battery lifetime was 20 minutes, but that wasn't really a big problem because you couldn't hold that phone up for that long." according to Cooper.

In the early 80s mobile phones were a luxury that cost thousands of dollars!

He and his team hoped one day everyone would have their own handset. "In fact we had a joke that said 'in the future, when you were born you would be assigned a telephone number and if you didn't answer the phone, you were dead'.

"We had no idea that in as little as 35 years more than half the people on Earth would have cellular telephones, and they give the phones away to people for nothing." Handheld phones were originally produced to help doctors and hospital staff improve their communications.

He hoped the devices would help bring safety and freedom to people, but the eventual social implications were beyond his understanding almost four decades ago. "We had no idea that things like Facebook and Twitter, and all these other concepts, would ever happen."

As mobile phones go to a fourth generation, with new features in each update, the inventor of the handheld phone said the handset of the future should aim to improve a user's quality of life.

"Technology makes your life better, more convenient, safer, educates you, entertains you, and mostly makes you more productive," said Mr Cooper.

"The cellphone in the long range is going to be embedded under your skin behind your ear along with a very powerful computer who is in effect your slave" predicts Martin Cooper!

Schedule :- Cricket Twenty20 World Cup 2010 Edition

The 2010 ICC World Twenty20 is an international Twenty20 cricket tournament which will be held in the West Indies from 30 April to 16 May 2010.

Although the tournament is held every two years beginning in 2007, the scheduled ICC Champions Trophy one-day international tournament to be held in the West Indies in 2010 has been revised to a Twenty20 format because the 2008 Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan was postponed due to security concerns and there was a need to correct the international cricketing tournament calendar.

This ICC World Twenty20 will be taking place only 10 months after the last one. As before, the tournament will feature 12 teams – the Test-playing nations and two qualifiers. Matches will be played at four grounds – Barbados, Guyana, St.Lucia and St.Kitts.

The tournament will be organised in parallel with the women's tournament, with the men's semi-finals and final being preceded by the semi-finals and final from the women's event. Click below to view a larger image of the schedule for the 2010 edition:

World's Smallest 3D Map Created by IBM team...

Scientists claim to have created the world's smallest three dimensional map, a map of the Earth, so small that 1,000 of them could fit on one grain of salt.

A team at computer giant IBM accomplished this through a new, breakthrough technique which uses a tiny, silicon tip with a sharp apex,100,000 times smaller than a sharpened pencil,to create patterns and structures as small as 15 nanometers at greatly reduced cost and complexity.

According to the scientists, this patterning technique opens new prospects for developing nano-sized objects in fields such as electronics, future chip technology, medicine, life sciences, and optoelectronics.

The complete 3D map of the world measuring only 22 by 11 micrometers was "written" on a polymer. At this size, 1,000 world maps could fit on a grain of salt. It is composed of 500,000 pixels, each measuring 20 nm2, and was created in only 2 minutes and 23 seconds, the 'Science and Advanced Materials' journal reported.

The core component of the new technique, which was developed by a team of IBM scientists, is a tiny, very sharp silicon tip measuring 500 nanometers in length and only a few nanometers at its apex.

"Advances in nanotechnology are intimately linked to the existence of high-quality methods and tools for producing nanoscale patterns and objects on surfaces," said physicist, Dr Armin Knoll, of IBM Research in Zurich. "With its broad functionality and unique 3D patterning capability, this nanotip-based patterning methodology is a powerful tool for generating very small structures," he added.

The Two-Man Bicycle Kick Goal - Finally executed in a real match!

Such goal were earlier only seen on the popular animated cartoon series - Captain Tsubasa.
In last Sunday's Argentina Primera Division match between Gimnasia La Plata and Boca Juniors, it all transpired and we probably won't see such a thing again. After the ball deflected off a Boca defender, Gimnasia's Sebastian Romero and Marco Perez both executed bicycle kicks at the same time to score a goal. Trying to figure the odds on both players executing overhead kicks in unison to put the ball in the back of the net is enough to make your head hurt, especially considering Perez had to scramble to his feet in order to get there.
Gimnasia La Plata ended up winning the match 1-0 and instead of being credited with half a goal each, Perez was the one given sole credit and upon closer inspection, it looks like he at least got more of the ball than Romero.
Whatever may be the case, this is really is a case of real-life imitating fiction!

World's first full face transplant done in Spain

The world's first full face transplant has been carried out in Spain, a team of doctors has claimed.

The Telegraph on Friday reported that the operation took place on a young man whose face was completely disfigured after he accidentally shot himself in the face in 2005. The patient had been operated on nine times without satisfactory success, therefore he was considered for full face transplant.

"This is the first full face transplant performed worldwide, as the 10 operations performed previously had been only partial," said a statement released by Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.

Doctors who undertook the marathon 24 hour surgery March 20 said that besides skin tissue, the patient received new cheekbones, facial muscles, teeth, palate, skin, nose, lips and jaw.

The accident victim, a farmer in his thirties, had not been able to swallow, speak or breathe properly.

In 2005, French woman, Isabelle Dinoire, became the first person in the world to have a face transplant. She had been mauled by her dog. She received a new nose and mouth.

French Woman fined for driving while wearing a Veil

Traffic police in France have fined a Muslim woman for wearing Islamic face veil while driving, according to her lawyer Jean-Michel Pollono.

The woman was fined $29 in early April in the western city of Nantes, her lawyer said on Friday.

The fine was based on a rule that says drivers should have "freedom of movement and a sufficient field of vision."

Pollono said on France-Info radio that he is protesting the decision, saying a veil is "the same as a motorcycle helmet" in terms of hindrance to vision.

The French government is set to consider a bill that bans Muslim women from wearing full-face veils, known as burqa, in public places.

France is home to the largest Muslim population among the 27 European Union member states. Nearly 10 percent of the 62 million French population is Muslim.

According to the French government, the legislation if approved would affect around 2,000 Muslim Frenchwomen.

iPhone can now be dual booted with Android

Most of us saw Linux running on iPhone a couple of years ago. That man who was behind porting Linux to iPhone has now done the same with Android.

Though it is only possible on 2nd and 3rd generation iPhone, iPhone 3G S users hopefully won’t have to wait that long to do the same.

As shown in the video below almost everything on iPhone-Android works just the way it does on other made-for-Android phones.

There has been some issues with installation that are being currently ironed out but people who have some advance knowledge will be able to dual boot their iPhones.

I am not sure how many people would want to install Android on iPhone but apparently there are enough people interested to get this thing going. If you are one of the people interested in installing Android on your iPhone, download the pre-built image and source from here (http://www.mediafire.com/?xqjzn12igfn).

Students made to walk on coals in Gujrat, India

A private school in Gujarat made pupils walk over burning coals and broken glass in a test designed to boost their confidence.

Officials at the Riverdale school in the city of Surat on Wednesday described the challenges set at a summer camp as "important exercises that will make a child strong and determined".

"We asked the students to walk with naked feet on fire and on broken glass pieces as it teaches them to deal with their fear and find new ways to overcome it," said Kalpesh Patel, a school administrator.

Patel said 80 children aged nine to 14 walked on the hot coals, while 110 students walked over glass pieces. He said no one suffered any injuries.

Television footage of the event was picked up by Indian news channels.

"The children were reluctant in the beginning but afterwards they exuded confidence," Patel said, adding that the school had been running the activities for more than a decade.

Fire-walking has existed as a religious ritual in many cultures for thousands of years. It has also gained some popularity in the United States as a team-building exercise and alternative health remedy.

P.S District education officer K.R. Jhanjhuria has ordered an enquiry into the incident.

Role of the media in Jessica Lall case

The Supreme Court has upheld the life term for Manu Sharma who was convicted for the 1999 murder of Jessica Lall.

The case became a big issue for the English media, helping it grab eyeballs in a decade when private news channels mushroomed in the country. It even inspired a novel by diplomat Vikas Swaroop, the author of the book on which the Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” was based.

The case was something of a movie plot where fashion, high society, crime, political influence and media activism came together.

As Jessica Lall’s family reconciles, can the media too can pat itself on the back.

The case also highlights the bias of the English-speaking media for what is described as PLUS or “People Like Us”.

Had Jessica been some nameless woman in a village would the case and the interest of the media been sustained this long? Would the outcome have been the same?

Within a fortnight after Jessica Lall was shot over her refusal to serve drinks, an icecream parlour attendant was allegedly shot dead for not stocking a particular icecream brand.

What happened to that case?

The similarity to the Jessica case was uncanny except we don’t care.  It may be said the media cannot focus on every case of crime, it is the job of the state after all.

Yet can it be said that choices can be revealing? Does the English media play a plutocratic role in this so-called democratic country?

Google, Facebook attacked by commissioners from 10 Nations

Google was the main target of a group of privacy commissioners from 10 nations who held a press event in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to air their grievances. They castigated the company over its botched Buzz rollout and criticized its Street View operations. Saying they've grown increasingly impatient with online companies that pay too little heed to national privacy laws and expectations, data protection commissioners from 10 countries on Tuesday launched what they promised would be an ongoing effort to match worldwide enforcement with the growing global market in social network information.

"We've seen this happening a couple of times now and we want to say, 'No, this can't go on the way it has," said Jennifer Stoddart, Canada's privacy commissioner.

The group fired its first shot at Google, asking the company to explain what is widely considered to be its flawed launch of the social networking tool, Buzz, and answer how it intends to more closely hew to privacy expectations in the future.

The commissioners, representing Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom, chided Google for failing to understand the privacy implications of automatically signing up users for Buzz and exposing some of their Gmail contacts to other users without clearly explaining what was happening.

"It is unacceptable to roll out a product that unilaterally renders personal information public, with the intention of repairing problems later as they arise," the commissioners wrote. "Privacy cannot be sidelined in the rush to introduce new technologies to online audiences around the world."

In response, Google issued a statement saying the company tries to be upfront about the information it collects and how it is used, and to give users tools to take control of that information, but it had no specific comment on the privacy commissioners' action.

"We have discussed all these issues publicly many times before and have nothing to add to today's letter -- instead we are focused on launching our new transparency tool which we are very excited about," the statement reads.

The transparency tool shows requests by governments around the world to remove information from Google, or to provide information about users.

A Lesson learned was that some of the same governments that have recently enacted strict new laws that will give media companies greater control over the Internet are the same ones complaining about Google violating users' rights is somewhat ironic, said privacy expert Lauren Weinstein of Vortex Technology.

"I'd dare say that in the future, a situation like this is unlikely to recur," remarked Weinstein. "What's troublesome to me about the overall story line here is that there's a lot of people who just don't want to let go of this." er, what the commissioners want is what users want -- for companies such as Google and Facebook to give them the ability to control how information they put on the Internet is used, Stoddard said.

The commissioners asked that Google, as a leader in the online community, enact broad standards to enhance privacy controls, including collecting as little information as possible, making it clear how the information will be used, making it easy to adjust privacy settings -- and having them default to privacy.

"In all of our countries, personal information is personal information," she said. "You can't just deem it to be public."

And if Internet companies don't listen? "This time, we choose to send what you may term a 'last warning' to the online community," said Jacob Kohnstamm, chairman of the Dutch data protection agency, "but we won't hesitate to act."

Long Term Evolution - Verizon's Goal?

Verizon is gearing up to launch its next wireless network technology, called Long Term Evolution (LTE), by the end of this year. While Verizon will, of course, still sell phones for this fourth generation (4G) network, it is also pushing to have it built into many other types of devices.

LTE will run on the spectrum formerly used to send television signals, which Verizon licensed from the U.S. government in 2008. The company expects to be able to support about 100 million users by the end of the year. But the saturation of the cell-phone market means that Verizon is also hoping to see the wireless technology used for many other kinds of devices. "We want to get to 500 to 600 percent penetration," says executive vice president and CTO Richard Lynch. This would mean an average of five or six wireless devices per person.

LTE promises better speed and lower latency than existing networks. Lynch says that users can expect uniform, reliable performance at five to 12 megabits per second! He expects data to travel round-trip in 25 to 30 milliseconds, a fifth of the latency on the current network.

Lynch envisions people using Verizon's 4G wireless network for cars, computers, TVs, and other home appliances, as well as regular cell phones. Among other devices, the company has tested wall sockets and power strips that include 4G wireless capabilities. This could enable new forms of home-monitoring and energy management.

One potential problem is that not all of these devices will be under Verizon's control. When the company purchased the 700-megahertz spectrum, it had to agree to open its network to devices made by other companies. These devices must still be tested and certified to ensure they run safely on the network, but third-party developers will have much more latitude.

So will a new battle emerge soon in this fast developing sector? Only Time will tell..

Did Yahoo win the Email Privacy case against The U.S. Justice Department?

The U.S. Justice Department has abruptly abandoned what had become a high-profile court fight to read Yahoo users' e-mail messages without obtaining a search warrant first.

In a two-page brief filed Friday, the Obama administration withdrew its request for warrantless access to the complete contents of the Yahoo Mail accounts under investigation.

Yahoo's efforts to fend off federal prosecutors' broad request attracted allies--in the form of Google, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Center for Democracy and Technology, and the Progress and Freedom Foundation--who argued that Americans who keep their e-mail in the cloud enjoy a reasonable expectation of privacy that is protected by the U.S. Constitution.

Two years ago, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama had pledged that, as president, he would "strengthen privacy protections for the digital age." This dispute had the potential to test his administration's actual commitment to privacy, which recently became the subject of a legislative push supported by Silicon Valley firms and privacy advocates.

Much of the information about the case in federal court in Colorado remains unclear, including the nature of the possible crime being investigated, how many e-mail accounts are at issue, and whether it was the flurry of publicity in the last few days or something else that prompted the U.S. Attorney's office in Denver to back down.

On December 3, 2009, U.S. Magistrate Judge Craig Shaffer ordered Yahoo to hand over to prosecutors certain records, including the contents of e-mail messages. Yahoo divulged some of the data but refused to turn over e-mail that had been previously viewed, accessed, or downloaded and was less than 181 days old.

A footnote to Friday's government brief says that the Justice Department "is aware that Yahoo and other various parties have now submitted briefs on various privacy issues in the context of the prior motion to compel. The government respectfully disagrees with positions taken in those briefs, but because the need for the motion to compel has been vitiated by Yahoo's further production, the government declines to litigate this matter in this moot context."

A million iPads sold?

Chitika Labs reported the 1 millionth iPad this Saturday. Chitika is an advertising network and serves over 2 billion ad impressions a month.

The way it tracks the number of iPads is by identifying and keeping a count of new iPads that show up on its network.

Obviously these are unofficial numbers, in fact at the time when Chikita was reporting 700,000 iPads identified, Apple announced 500,000 sold. Chikita reset the count to match Apple’s numbers and tweaked its tracking technique from IP to cookie based tracking.

If the numbers are any true, Apple will leave very little room for rumors by publishing the numbers by early next week, most probably with the 1st Quarters revenue numbers.

But for now if these numbers are any true, it took 14 days for Apple to hit the lucky number. iPhone 3G and 3Gs sold a million units each in the first 3 days but that included upgrades as well.

Apple to adopt AMD chips?

Apple is reportedly talking with Advanced Micro Devices about using the No. 2 chipmaker’s processors. Simply put, an Apple win would be huge for AMD since its profit margins just can’t keep up with Intel’s at the moment.

The AppleInsider reports the following:

-AMD reps have been seen talking with Apple;
-Apple is working with AMD chips in its labs;
-Apple wants to diversify and isn’t happy about Intel design decisions that have hurt the company’s partnership with Nvidia;
-Apple may be interested in AMD for its graphics ability and the fusion of CPUs and GPUs.

The AppleInsider report is fascinating in that it shows how Apple may be looking for leverage.

Add it up and AMD could provide the graphics capability Apple is looking for. As AppleInsider noted, AMD traditionally trails Intel on raw performance. However, Ghz is a secondary issue for Apple buyers. An Apple purchase is about design, quality, OS X and ease of use. AMD can get by on the Ghz equation with a mere close enough to Intel if the graphics stars line up.

An Apple design win would be a major boon for AMD because it is a known fact that  the processor is a secondary consideration (at best) for buying an Apple System.

Promoted Tweets - Buy Words & Earn from your Tweets!

To their credit, Twitter's executives are self-aware enough to know the company has been living sort of like a trust-fund child well past its metaphorical college days. Every startup needs some time in the cradle, of course, but when you're hosting  50 million messages per day and you still don't have a revenue plan, questions start getting kind of pointed.

This is not lost on cofounder Biz Stone. He recently wrote on the company blog, "Believe me, when your name is Biz and you're a cofounder of Twitter, it also means putting yourself at the mercy of folks like Stephen Colbert who hit home runs with lines like, 'So, I assume that 'Biz' in 'Biz Stone' does not stand for 'Business Model.'"

That particular blog post was the announcement of the first piece of what may indeed grow into a real business model for the microblogging service.

Any business in the world has long been able to take a free ride on Twitter -- just make an official profile for your company, and suddenly you can communicate directly with customers and shout your own message to anyone who cares to listen, just as long as you keep it brief. But now businesses will also have the option of buying Promoted Tweets. These are messages associated with a particular search term.

People search out subjects on Twitter all the time -- coffee, cough syrup, thread count, hydroelectricity, digeridoos, literally any word you can think of. If your company buys the rights to that word, your messages gets prime placement on the search results page. Organic results are up there too, but the Promoted Tweet gets the premier  suite.

There is a catch. Twitter has spent years getting a feel for the general garbage tolerance of its users, and the company knows that if it starts selling tweet placement, it could easily sell itself out if it isn't careful about it.

So here's the rule for Promoted Tweets: They have to get some action. They have to be retweeted, responded to, or otherwise interacted with. If your Promoted Tweet is bland and uninteresting, it's no longer worthy of PT status, and it gets dropped. You can't just buy your way to the top of Twitter; you've got to buy and earn it!

Of course, this idea of selling search advertisements sounds a lot like what Google does. And right as Twitter started its own minor-league version of Google's game, Google announced plans for a new form of Twitter search. This is going to let people not only search what tweeters are saying about any search term; it'll also document how often a particular term was used in the past. So now we'll all have this graphical, hugely crowdsourced data stream to figure out, down to the minute, exactly when any given pop-culture term or phrase started getting overused and tiresome.

Google would probably love to buy Twitter if its founders ever decided to drop their ideals about corporate independence in favor of independent wealth. Barring that, perhaps some kind of limited partnership will eventually grow. Author Paul Gillin told us, "Both companies envy each other. Twitter would like to be a search engine and Google would like to be a social network. It makes sense for them to be together at some point."

Apple iPad banned in Israel

If you are travelling to Israel anytime soon you might want to leave your iPad back home, if not you will not only have to leave the  iPad with the customs but also pay a fee for each day of your stay in the country.

Israel imposed a ban on import and usage of iPad in the country. The ban comes in effect immediately and customs officials said to have confiscated about 10 of them already. The ban was implemented because of the Wi-Fi frequencies iPad operates on.

Apparently, iPad operates on higher frequencies than other gadgets. This can cause issues as the gadget might interfere with other gadgets operating on the lower frequencies.

Apple has not reacted to the ban yet but the company is expected to make changes to iPad that are sold internationally as Europe has similar rules in place for Wi-Fi frequencies.

iPad was launched on 3rd April and sold over 500,000 units in the first week itself. Though the international shipments were postponed by Apple sighting the high local demand now it seems that was not the only reason.

Let’s wait and see how Apple will react and what changes it makes to be compatible with wireless communication laws internationally.

Air Travelers across six continents affected due to Icelandic Ash

An enormous ash cloud from a remote Icelandic volcano caused the biggest flight disruption since the 2001 terrorist attacks on Thursday as it drifted over northern Europe and stranded travelers on six continents!

Officials said it could take days for the skies to become safe again in one of aviation's most congested areas.
The cloud, floating kilometers above Earth and capable of knocking out jet engines, wrecked travel plans for tens of thousands of people, from tourists and business travelers to politicians and royals. They couldn't see the source of their frustration — except indirectly, when the ash created vivid red and lavender sunsets.

Non-emergency flights in Britain were canceled, and most will stay grounded until at least midday Friday. Authorities in Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Belgium also closed their air space. France shut down 24 airports, including the main hub of Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Germany's Berlin and Hamburg were shut Thursday evening, and several flights out of the U.S. had to double back.

At London's Heathrow airport, normally one of the world's busiest with more than 1,200 flights and 180,000 travelers a day, passengers stared sadly at departure boards on which every flight was listed as canceled.

A volcano beneath Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull (ay-yah-FYAH'-plah-yer-kuh-duhl) glacier began erupting Wednesday for the second time in less than a month, triggering floods and shooting smoke and steam miles into the air.

About 700 people from rural areas near the volcano were evacuated Thursday because of flash flooding, as water carrying icebergs the size of small houses rushed down the mountain. The Civil Protection Department said there could be damage to roads and other infrastructure.

The ash cloud became a menace to air travel as it drifted south and east toward northern Europe. The ash plume drifted at between 20,000 feet and 36,000 feet (6,000 meters and 11,000 meters), where it could get sucked into airplane engines and cause them to shut down. The smoke and ash also could affect aircraft visibility.

Several U.S. flights bound for Heathrow, including those from Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, Las Vegas and New York, had to return to their departure cities or land elsewhere when London airports were closed. Canadian airlines also canceled some Europe-bound flights.

In Washington, the Federal Aviation Administration said it was working with airlines to try to reroute some flights around the huge ash cloud, which is hundreds of miles wide. Flights from Asia, Africa, South America, Australia and the Middle East to Heathrow and other top European hubs were also put on hold.

It was unclear whether the ash cloud would affect the arrival of President Barack Obama and other world leaders planning to attend the state funeral Sunday of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash. Polish authorities banned flights over part of northwestern Poland late Thursday, the country's PAP news agency reported. The funeral is to be held in Krakow, in southeastern Poland.
The Icelandic plume lies above the Atlantic Ocean close to the flight paths for most routes from the U.S. East Coast to Europe, and over northern Europe itself.

Explosive volcanic eruptions inject large amounts of highly abrasive ash — essentially very small rock fragments — into the upper atmosphere, the cruising altitude of most jet airliners. It can cause significant damage to both airframes and engines.

Ironically, Iceland's Keflavik airport remained open Thursday. Flights to Europe were canceled but those to North America were operating normally.

Iceland, a nation of 320,000 people, sits on a large volcanic hot spot in the Atlantic's mid-oceanic ridge, and has a history of devastating eruptions.

New Google's Twitter Search - Is it better than the Original Twitter Search?

Google just announced a new feature in the search options which lets users search the twitter timeline for a specific word or phrase.

In a few days the new update will be globally available in English language; however, you can try it right now using this link.

The search option seems to be better than Twitter search in many ways.

Time-based search: Google search lets you select a time period from which the results will be shown.

For example if you search for “Earthquake” the time line shows 3 notable spikes and it’s pretty obvious that each spike represents an earthquake in some part of the world.

In this case there was an earthquake in Chicago on 10th Feb, the disastrous earthquake in Chile on 27th of Feb and the most recent one in Mexicali on 5th of April. (A new earthquake hit China today!)

Top Links: The search also shows the top tweeted links on a specific date or time. This feature really helps in separating the good content from not so good content. Also, tweets are the preview of the information you are looking for the real/detailed information lies in these links on the side.

A very helpful feature while researching a topic and would like to get a sense of reactions from the electronic  media and individuals.

For now the search data will search tweet as old as February 11, 2010, however, users will be able to search for tweets going back as far as March, 2006!

US iPad demands delay iPad International Release

Apple iPad WiFi which was launched in US earlier this month has sold about 500000 units just in its very first week. While iPad sales must have pleased Steve Jobs, it has brought dismay to the hearts of international iPad seekers.

Apple claims the huge demand of the iPad has forced them to slightly delay the iPad international launch date by a few weeks. The iPad was expected to go on sale internationally by the end of this month but the new schedule finds a date in May.

The Cuperinto giant’s touch screen tablet has taken over the US markets by a storm and every day, more and more people are getting inclined to buy an iPad. While those living in the US have already begun their celebrations with the iPad, the rest of the world awaits in hope and patience.

The new date to preorder your iPad online is reportedly 10th of May which is when the details on international pricing and availability will be also be disclosed and perhaps for the the iPad 3G release as well, at least for Canadian customers by the end of May.

"Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10.

We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.”, reported Apple.

The World's Most Expensive Mouse

Okay folks, we have all seen gadgets like iPhone and iPad bath in gold and get studded in diamonds, andl that somehow seemed justified, but now let us introduce you to this extravagant piece of gadgetry which would otherwise resemble to a desktop computer mouse.

Diamonds (A Girl's best friend I presume) are beginning to creep in everywhere like zombies to turn our favorite and utilitarian gadgets into some sort of not-so-necessary luxury gadgets and make them more than expensive than what we would want to afford.

And incidentally, if you are planning to buy your significant other something outlandish from the chest of gifts for geeks,  the latest toy on the block is a diamond-studded computer mouse invented by a Swiss company called Pat Says Now.

The Diamond Computer Mouse is actually a three-button computer mouse with a scroll wheel and has diamonds etched on its surface in two standard layouts, a Scattered Diamonds layout and a “Diamond Flower” layout, each of which looks beautiful.

Each layout is sprawled by 59 brilliant cut diamonds etched on a beautiful 18 carat gold body to give it an elegant look. Pat Says Now, which specializes in manufacturing computer mice of all sizes and shapes, offers you an option to customize it before you buy.

Their innovative design makes Pat Says Now mice a perfect gift for anybody working with a computer. Attractively wrapped in a specially designed box, these trendy “desk pets” are a temptation not many can resist.

You also get the lavishness to choose the design pattern for inscribing the diamonds on its surface and a choice of three color combinations. Now that sets you back for £16,200.00 or $26,730, which is good enough to buy you a muscular Dodge Challenger!

Technically, this optical diamond mouse is blessed with an 800dpi resolution, a USB with PS/2 for Mac and Windows PC connectivity and comes with a 3-year warranty.

But before you do, make  sure the computer you own deserves that upgrade to luxury, seriously. My surely does not! Ladies, perhaps this one is for you.

Google under threat from Facebook!

Facebook is one of the terrific internet success stories we’ve witnessed in the recent past. The company has just started growing in size, employees and locations. The success Facebook is currently witnessing comes as a huge threat to companies like Google.

Facebook much like Google was a project that was conceptualized and launched from University dorm rooms which went on to become the most popular social networking site as we know it. Though Facebook and Google do not overlap in terms of products ( Orkut will eventually shutdown) there are quite a few things that are common between the two giants besides their top executives .

Facebook in many aspects hasn’t grown to its full potential and yet it is considered the biggest threat to Google. Why?

While other sites try to do everything humanly/technologically possible to keep users on the site for as long as they can, Google takes pride in sending their visitors off to another site as quickly as possible. The faster a user navigates away from the search engine the better it is as it means the users found what they were look for.

The fact that people don’t spend much time on Google can come back to bite them  as Facebook can very well take advantage of the time people spend on the social networking site. What’s even more dangerous for Google is that we are talking about 200 million daily active users who spent close to an hour on Facebook every single day!

Now imagine if Facebook decides to show a search box in the most prominent place to the users who spend close to an hour on Facebook, users are bound to use it.

Google has been trying hard to diversify its revenue; however, a major chunk of it (about 70%) still comes from Google.com. So, if Google.com users find an easier way to search without having to visit Google.com you can imagine the hit Google will have to take for the loss of users and thus revenue.

Here are few more mind-blowing numbers indicating towards the unavoidable Facebook dominance.

    * Facebook has more than 400 million active users and 200 million of them login each day
    * More than 5 billion pieces of content is shared on Facebook every week this includes, web links, blog posts, news stories, photos, etc..
    * Average user sends 8 friend requests every month (That explains the tremendous growth)
    * Facebook is available in more than 70 languages
    * 70% of Facebook users are outside United States

Keeping all of this in mind, if Facebook decides to partner with Microsoft that will prove to be the biggest disaster for Google as Facebook users (200 million of them), who login to Facebook every single day won’t necessarily have to go to Google to find something on the web.

If users cut down on the number of times they visit Google.com it will directly affect Google’s bottom line. If Google starts to take the hit Advertisers will be first to adjust their budgets to spend more the bigger source of traffic, Facebook.

That said, Facebook is not a Search Engine, it cannot care less about Google search so Microsoft or anyother company trying to take advantage of Facebook’s userbase will have to come up with a proposition or a deal that not only makes finincial sense but adds value to the social networking site.

iPhone OS 4.0 allegedly jail-broken already! Check Out Fellow Twitterer iH8sn0w

Apple announced the iPhone OS 4.0 a few hours ago. While we expected one of the hackers to claim a Jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0, this was truly a shocker!

iH8sn0w claims to have uncovered an exploit to Jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 on his iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G.

While most other iPhone hacker teams are holding their exploits close to their chest, iH8sn0w plans to release the software to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 beta. This move might help the Apple patch the exploit in its final release of iPhone 4.0.

Though hackers have had successfully been jailbreaking all the recent iPhone OS releases, Unlocking iPhone OS has been a challenge after the recent baseband update. There are quite a few iPhone users out there who have updated their software by mistake and now are locked with AT&T. So, I am sure there are thousands out there waiting to hear about Unlock for iPhone OS 4.0 on iPhone 3G, 3G S, etc..

While we know it’s been done, we don’t know how it’s done yet.

What ever the case may be, the fact is that iH8sn0w following on Twitter has increased exponentially and he is a celebrity overnight!

A 5-7 inch iPad on the cards?

Not interested in the just-released 9.7-inch iPad? How about a 5- to 7-inch version of the iPad? That's the hot iPad rumor these day.

According to Taiwanese tech site Digitimes claims, we might see a 5- to 7-inch version of the iPad "as soon as" the first quarter of 2011, with a price tag "below" $400!

The new tablet would "target the highly portable mobile device market" as well as "consumers that focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input," according to a senior analyst for Digitimes, citing " talks with upstream component sources."

In other words, we'd be talking about a new tablet that would essentially fit between the iPhone and the current iPad.

Of course, this is only a rumor for now, although I think it's safe to say that Apple will probably have a new version of the iPad ready in about a year's time, and there's already been talk of iPads in "different sizes and form factors."

Forget 1-800. Try Go800 SMS

Gone are the days when you had to remember a long 10 digit number to call any business or a company. A New York based startup, Go800 seeks to solve that issue to keep things really simple.

Go800 offers service which can simplify the way customers contact the companies. Businesses can choose a keyword and map it with a phone number. Every time an SMS is sent to “Go800” or “46800” with a particular keyword the sender will be connected to the business that is associated with that “keyword”.

For example next time you want to call your local Chase Bank number, just SMS “Chase” to Go800 and you will be connected in few seconds.

Few of the known brands like Citibank, Chase, Budget Car Rentals, Hilton, etc… are already onboard with this service. Go800 claims that its innovative service not only makes marketing easier but it also makes financial sense as the cost of connection is cheaper than the toll free 1800 numbers.

The service is currently running in beta which officially launches on 15th of April. Go800 first launches in US with national coverage and then expands to Canada and Europe.

At this time all advertisers have to get in touch with the Go800 reps to get their keywords registered and have their campaigns up and running, however, advertisers will be provided with an interface to search and register for the keywords in the near future.

Advertisers can choose from several Voice Keywords packages. Businesses can choose their brand name as keywords for a nationwide coverage for just $500 a month. Generic Voice Keyword costs $10,000 a month. For example if Pizza Hut decides to go with its brand name i.e “Pizza Hut” it pays only $500 but if it chooses to go with “Pizza” as its keyword then it has to pay a higher cost for a generic keyword.

Another option lets you choose a particular area by its area code to run a campaign. Local campaigns are priced at anywhere between $40 and $250 based on certain factors.

Overall, Go800 is a brilliant business idea that will see a better conversion rates with advertisements and will be hugely adapted by the advertisers on a national and local level.

iPad Is Airport and TSA Friendly

Not only is it kid friendly, but the iPad is also apparently TSA friendly as well.

Unlike your laptop, which the Transportation Security Administration requests you take out and place in a separate bin during airport security screening, Apple’s new tablet is apparently deemed small and thin enough to not warrant a separate check. In a statement issued by the agency, they relayed that you won’t need to remove your iPad from your bag unless specifically requested to do so.

Beyond its comparatively smaller size, the TSA said the iPad is less likely to be accompanied by a range of accessories and external drives that can obscure a clear image via the X-ray scanner. A range of “checkpoint friendly” laptop cases play on this point by isolating the computer itself — but as with the iPad, even though you may be safe for the most part you should be ready to remove any particular item the TSA requests.

The news is certainly another boon for Apple, who could now legitimately tout the iPad as a more travel-friendly device.
